2020 TMEA ALL-STATE MUSICIAN

November 18, 2019

Congratulations to the following Reedy Orchestra student on her placement into one the TMEA All-State Orchestras:

-Yunbeen Bae (12) | All-State Symphony Orchestra Cellist

Making a TMEA All-State ensemble is one of the highest individual achievements a Texas student musician can achieve.

A bit of background information about this competition:

The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) sponsors the Texas All-State audition process to promote students' dedication to their musical knowledge and skill. Each year, approximately 1,700 students are selected through a process that begins with more than 68,000 students from around the state vying for the honor to perform in one of 15 ensembles (bands, orchestras, and choirs). Orchestra ends their All-State selection process first – band and choir are still on-going at the moment.

This competitive process begins with auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advances from their Region to compete against musicians from other areas in seven TMEA Area competitions. For orchestra, students named to their top All-Region Orchestra submit their recordings directly to the state, where they are judged against all other orchestra students from across Texas to determine Area and All-State honors.

Yunbeen has earned the privilege of participating in rehearsals and performances directed by nationally-recognized conductors during the annual state TMEA Clinic/Convention, scheduled this year for February 2020 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.

Congratulations again and Go Reedy!

  • General All-State Info

  • All-State Orchestra Audition Etudes

    • Updated 5.1.18

    • All-State Orchestra Audition Etude Errata - please check link regularly!

      • ADDITIONAL VIOLA ERRATA (May 2018):

        • This edition offers several choices of fingerings and bowings. In each case, neither choice is more or less difficult than the other. Students should select what works best for them.

        • A note about the markings on the second half of many bars. In the Pagels edition it is shown as an accent. It is actually a "long accent" or a "quick diminuendo." The dynamic should last the entire dotted-quarter-note, not just on the first eighth.

        • The alternate bowings come from using both the Hermann and Pagels editions as reference. Neither is more difficult or easier, so choosing one over another gives no advantage. Without looking, it would be quite difficult for a judge to know which is being used.

        • The alternate fingerings are more updated than the original editions for violin (i.e., Hermann). They do not avoid 2nd or 4th position, and follow the concept of using a different finger on chromatic half-steps (such as F-F#, G-G#, etc.) This is more important on the viola than the violin since the half-steps are a bit wider. If a student or teacher is more familiar with traditional fingerings, they should be permitted to use them.

        • Please take note of this message from the state TMEA office regarding the All-State Viola Mazas No. 44 etude.
